BACKGROUND: wiki

PERSONALITY:

"You're a straight-A student, a cheerleader. For God sakes, you're the perfect girl-next-door."

On the outside, Betty Cooper is your typical dream girl next door. She's meant to be the sugar to Veronica's spice. She juggles working on the school’s newspaper, cheerleading and chairing the Homecoming Dance committee, along with keeping up her grades. She looks perfect and polished, however, the cracks in Betty's perfect facade slowly start to show as the season progresses. Because in truth, Betty has a lot of baggage. In addition to buckling under the weight of her mother's crazy high expectations, she's dealing with her sister Polly's supposed 'breakdown', while trying not to have her own breakdown thanks to her depression and anxiety.

"Betty don't. Don't do give up. You family is definitely splintering right now but it won't fall apart because of you. Because you're holding them together. You're so much stronger than all of the white noise. You're stronger than your mother. You're stronger than your father. You're holding this family together."

Betty has inherited her mom’s obsessive need to appear perfect, especially in perfect control. Her mother is extremely manipulative to Betty and constantly tries to control every aspect of her Betty's life. However, she wants to be in perfect control of her self. On the inside, she feels dark and alienated, She never feels good enough, there is a darkness and alienation that comes with that and despite the fact that she’s the reason for it, she hates when people can’t see past perfect image she presents. She represses her negative emotions to help maintain her facade of perfect control, which leads to self-harm (digging her nails into her palms so hard they bleed), which may or may not be intentional.

"Something is very...very wrong with me. Like, there's this darkness in me that's overwhelming. Sometimes I don't know where it comes from, but I think that's what makes me do things."

Betty has her rougher moments, moments where she loses control and seems to lose touch with reality, especially when it has to do with her older sister Polly, who is pregnant and basically in a home for unwed mothers-to-be. The darker side of her personality takes over like when she threatens to kill Cheryl for speaking badly about her sister or when she seems to take on a second personality and tortures one of the football players as revenge for the football team’s sexual conquest book, which Polly was in.

"[H]e was oblivious and you were pining after him in quiet desperation."

When it comes to romance and boys, Betty spent most of her life pining for Archie Andrews in “quiet desperation” as Veronica refers to it. They always went to the same school, were in the same classes, they are literally the boy and girl next door. But Archie doesn’t feel that way about her, he depends on her friendship and guidance. I think Betty wishes she could be more like Jughead, which I believe that is where the attraction lies. While they couldn't seem to be more different, inwardly what Betty feels is exactly what Jughead presents to the world. Because she can't present any weakness to the world, she feels like an outsider which is where Jughead seems to find his comfort. He understands and accepts her on a level that no one else has, not even her family or Veronica.

"Veronica: Betty, now that it's just us girls, and at the risk of us failing the Bechdel test, are you legitimately cool with Archie and me? Swear on the September issue?
Betty: And on my copy of "Forever" by Judy Blume."

Betty is loyal and tries to take care of her fellow woman, a great example being the time she helped Ethel, Veronica and the other girls from the football player’s sexual conquest book and getting justice for them. She even rises above her rocky start with Veronica (after V kisses Archie), agreeing never to let a boy come between their friendship, deciding that a friend can better than a boyfriend, thus starting a strong bond between the two girls, pushing the love triangle off to the side.

"I learned that from the Nancy Drew detective handbook."

When she is composed, Betty is caring and has a strong sense of justice. She can be like a dog with a bone, investigative-ly, not letting things go especially if her friends are in trouble or need help. She’s a tenacious friend, always there to see them through things even if they are trying to push her away. And she becomes a bit of a Nancy Drew as well as an investigative reporter in order to get to the truth of different mysteries/issues. When she found out that Archie was sleeping with his teacher, Ms. Grundy, a little out of jealousy and mostly out concern from him, she Nancy Drew-ed her way to the truth that the woman was sketchy as hell. She also stood by both Jughead and his father when they were each wrongfully accused of Jason’s murder. She was determined to find the truth, no matter what.

[ when the camera turns on you see ayoung woman in a delicate cardigan, her blond hair up in a high and tight ponytail and a notepad in her hand, pencil tucked behind her ear (all she's missing is the reporter's hat)]

Hi, I'm Betty Cooper. [ she does a sort of wave at the camera.] I'm a junior reporter for the local newspaper. [ cue a soft, humble smile even if she feels like she's been assigned a fluff piece, she's determined to make this interesting and to do a perfect job.] I was wondering if anyone would be willing to sit down for an interview. I'm going to be doing a weekly column featuring any new imPorts, just a short bio thing.

[ No, there's no ulterior motives here, none at all.]

So... if anyone is willing, let me know.
